Biography & Profile – Lee Kian Choong – Chinese Ink Art & Watermedia

Background & Development

Lee Kian Choong is a contemporary fine artist whose practice bridges Eastern tradition and Western innovation. Born in Malaysia, educated in the United Kingdom, and working professionally in Singapore, his paintings utilize a fluid synthesis of classical Chinese ink, contemporary watermedia, and delicate mixed media on rice paper.

Driven by the philosophy that art is a universal language, his work intentionally dissolves geographic and cultural boundaries. By deconstructing the visible world into light, movement, and semi-abstract forms, Lee explores the shared emotional landscapes and collective realities of the human journey.

The Analytical Mind & Mastery of Light

Lee's creative approach combines the precision of an engineer, the rhythm of a musician, and a lifetime spent observing light through a lens.

Systematic Vision
A background in Control Systems and Computing Science (B.Eng. Hons, University of Sheffield, UK, 1982) trained me to see systemic harmony beneath complex structures. This analytical foundation pairs with my early training as a brass band trumpeter, instilling an intuitive grasp of rhythm, movement, and the expressive power of spatial silence within the work.

Mastery of Form
Decades behind the camera served as a profound education in isolating human emotion through visual geometry. Mentored by Richard Farrand (FRPS, FBIPP), I developed a distinct, atmospheric treatment of illumination.

Historical Distinction
In 1989, I was awarded the prestigious Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) of Great Britain, becoming the first photographer based in Singapore to hold a Fellowship in Portraiture. As the founder of Portrait Master Studio (1991–2008), I spent years capturing royalty, heads of state, and cultural luminaries—a practice that deeply refined my understanding of subtle tonal gradients, shadow, and transient light.

The Contemporary Synthesis

The Leap into Abstraction
Driven to express the invisible worlds of memory and consciousness rather than record physical reality, Lee's practice underwent a major creative evolution. He earned a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Practice from the University of Huddersfield, UK, in 2006. The following year, he made the definitive choice to close his successful portrait studio to commit his career entirely to contemporary fine art.

A Lineage of Master Mentors
His transition into painting was deeply enriched by close, personal dialogues with monumental master artists. The late pioneer artist Dr. Chen Wen Hsi awakened his appreciation for the spiritual core of traditional Chinese art. A close exchange with the late Chen Shizhong, Vice President of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, deepened his technical grasp of classical brushwork traditions. Finally, his mentorship under Cultural Medallion master painter Siew Hock Meng expanded his contemporary painterly vision.

Internal Grounding
Parallel to his studio work, Lee’s decades as a traditional martial arts instructor and a practitioner of deep meditation provide a critical physical and mental grounding. This disciplined internal training allows him to balance dynamic external energy with absolute internal stillness upon the rice paper surface.

Exhibitions & International Recognition

Global Milestones
Since committing fully to his art, Lee's work has secured significant international critical validation. His paintings have been featured in major Chinese art auctions, including Shanghai DuoYunXuan (2013, 2014), and he was named one of only two category winners at the First Chinese Contemporary Ink Art Competition organized by Poly Auction. In 2015, he was invited by the Macao Government to stage a solo exhibition at the prestigious Taipa Houses–Museum.

International Honors
This global reputation is anchored by top-tier accolades in the United States, including First Place at the 47th International Watercolor Exhibition by the Louisiana Watercolor Society (2017) and Second Place at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art (2019). His paintings are consistently jury-selected by elite watermedia institutions worldwide—including the Spokane and Pikes Peak Watercolor Societies—and were recognized with a Certificate of Excellence from HK Holbein Inc. (USA) and Holbein Art Materials Inc. (Japan).

Artistic Philosophy

The Introspective Shift
Between 2020 and 2026, Lee’s practice entered a prolonged period of deep introspection. Stepping away from public competition, he chose to strip away distractions to re-examine the core elements of perception. Through this focused reflection, he recognized color as the definitive, foundational thread unifying his life’s work across all mediums.

Atmospheric Transcendence
Influenced by Eastern philosophies of transience and impermanence, Lee views the fleeting qualities of light in photography and the spontaneous fluid motions of watermedia as parallel expressions of existence. His recent works move entirely past literal subjects, focusing instead on atmospheric harmony, subtle transitions, and cooler tonalities—such as deep blues and purples—to evoke mystery, contemplation, and emotional resonance.

The Transcendent Surface
Ultimately, his art serves as a spiritual bridge. The surface becomes a quiet, sacred space where reason meets intuition, and the visible world gently yields to the invisible, transcendent dimensions of human consciousness.
