THE CONTEMPORARY CHINESE INK & FINE ART OF LEE KIAN CHOONG

CONTEMPORARY SEMI-ABSTRACT CHINESE INK, WATERCOLOUR & MIXED MEDIA PAINTING

My contemporary art practice is an intuitive search for the poetic and the transcendent, born out of my deeply personal responses to visual imagery. Working primarily through semi-abstraction, I draw creative inspiration from an expansive range of subjects—including landscapes, human figures, elements of nature, and the wider universe. Since developing my own distinctive painting language around the year 2000, I have continued to explore new visual possibilities, allowing each individual artwork to find its own direction through a balance of structured observation and pure intuition.

My extensive professional background as a fine art photographer deeply influences how I observe, compose, and interpret the physical world. Painting, however, gives me the absolute freedom to move beyond the boundaries of a single captured image. Through this fluid medium, I am able to transform tangible impressions into a raw, layered expression of life, nature, and existence. Utilizing a synthesis of classical Chinese ink, watercolour, and mixed media on paper, my paintings deliberately strip away geographic and rigid representational forms to investigate the underlying flows of cosmic energy, rhythm, and atmosphere.

Deeply informed by Eastern aesthetics and philosophical traditions, I embrace the concept of emptiness, visual balance, and the dynamic tension between presence and absence. Light remains central to my practice, serving as both an essential visual element and an internal metaphor for awareness, transformation, and transcendence. Through layered ink washes, complex textures, and gestural brushwork, I construct immersive spaces that prioritize contemplation over literal description. For me, art is the embodiment of universality. Ultimately, these works are not rigid narratives but open invitations for reflection, stillness, and imaginative participation.
