Biography

Steadfast determination and stubborn persistence are the two key attributes that have allowed Lee Kian Choong to realize his dream of becoming a full time artist.

Even prior to his career as an artist, Kian Choong has always been deeply invested in the realm of visual arts. While pursuing his education in the United Kingdom, he delved deep into Photographic art as a hobby. In the same year that he graduated with an Honors Degree in Control Systems and Computing Science from The University of Sheffield, UK, he was also awarded Licentiateship of The Royal Photographic Society in 1982.

Subsequently, he went on to attain the Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society, won several international awards, exited the IT industry and opened his own portrait studio in 1991. Since then, he has photographed royalties, ministers, ambassadors, celebrities and other prominent figures.

Nevertheless, his real interest has always resided in painting. Accordingly, he transitioned to creating contemporary Chinese art. His resulting works are a combination of his extensive experience in both fields, featuring elements of personal childhood memories, reveries of the Universe, as well as his personal philosophy.

With his diverse background embodying both Eastern and Western cultures, he seeks to create his own "globalised" art style that acts as a bridge between the two distinctive cultures.

Since embarking on his career as an artist, his art has been well received by various collectors. Notably, his artworks were selected for Shanghai Dowmin Modern Chinese and Calligraphy Auction in 2013 and 2014. Apart from having his artworks in China auctions, he also emerged as one of two winners under the category Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and others in the First Chinese Contemporary Ink Art Competition organized by Yidian and the Chinese biggest Auction House Poly Auction Pte Ltd in 2015. In the same year, he was invited by the Macao Government to stage a solo art exhibition at the Taipa Houses-Museum.

In 2017, he was awarded First Place in the 47th International Watercolor Exhibition organized by The Louisiana Watercolor Society. In the same year, he was also awarded Fifth Place in the International Watermedia 2017 Art Exhibition organized by The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society of Colorado. His artwork was also shortlisted for exhibition in the 40th International Watercolor Exhibition organized by The Art Society-Houston, United States.

At the core, Kian Choong’s take on the field of visual arts is simple and all encompassing: "Art is the embodiment of universality".
